US Senator. The son of James D. Westcott, who served as secretary of state for New Jersey from 1830 to 1840, he studied law and practised as a lawyer in New Jersey. After becoming a clerk in the Consular Bureau of the State Department in Washington, DC, he was named as the Secretary of the Territory of Florida, serving from 1830 to 1834, and performing duties of Governor. Elected as a member of the territorial legislature in 1832, he served one year, and then served as attorney-general for the middle district of Florida from 1834 to 1836. Again elected to serve in the legislature, he was a member of the convention for framing the Florida state constitution in 1838 to 1839, and, on the admission of Florida as a state in 1845 was elected as a Democratic Senator from Florida to the United States Senate as a Democrat, serving 1845 to 1849. When his term expired, he moved to New York City and practised law there until 1862, when he moved to Montreal. He lived there until his death in 1880.
