He was born in Farville to Oliver Morton and Junietta Childs. His first few years of school were in Cammack. He graduated from Matthews High School in 1930 and attended Indiana Central College and one year at Ball State Teachers College. In 1940, he and his wife moved to Muncie, and he sang in several male quartets. In 1970, he and his wife moved back to Matthews where he and three other men formed a quartet called the Four Hirams. They were all Past Masters of Matthews Lodge No. 650, singing in many towns and cities. He belonged to Matthews Eastern Star No. 486 and was Past Patron there. He also was Past Patron of Muncie Chapter No. 104. He served in the Navy in WWII from 1942 to 1946, stationed in the Admiralty Islands in the Pacific as an Aviation Chief Petty Officer. He was a member of the American Legion, Matthews.

Oliver retired from Warner Gear after 40 years and then opened a barbershop for 15 years in Matthews. He married Viola (Davis) on January 2, 1940, in Cambridge, Iowa. She preceded him in death March 26, 2003.

Survivors include brothers, Robert (Ruby) Childs, Warren, and Charles (Barbara) Childs, Gaston; a sister, Illon Freese, Upland; nieces, Betty Sue Hahn, Dunkirk, Linda (Gary) Bragg, Muncie, Mary Jo St. John, Kalamzoo, Mich.; nephews, Tom (Nancy) Childs, Muncie, Mark (Sue Ellen) Childs, Hagerstown, Greg (Jeanine) Childs, Churubusco, Jeffrey (Connie) Childs, Barrington, Ill.; and a sister-in-law, Velma Sampers, Bella Vista, Ark.

He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl, L.D. and Herman; two sisters, Elizabeth and Delight.
