Sam Hunter, Jr. age 63, passed away on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at his home.
A native of Cumberland County, Kentucky, He was born June 23, 1949, to Samuel F. Hunter (deceased) and Dorothy Spear Hunter. He died Saturday, November 24, 2012, in St. Johns, St. Johns County, Florida, at the age of 63 years, 5 months, and 1 day.
He was a graduate of Bowling Green High School and Western Kentucky University.
He served his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1970 in Manheim, Germany. He returned to Bowling Green, KY after military service, attended college and worked for the U.S. Postal Service. He retired from CSX Transportation (formerly L&N Railroad) in 2011, after having worked with the company since 1974, managing customer service operations in three locations: Bowling Green, KY, Lavergne, TN, and Jacksonville, FL.
Hunter was an avid outdoorsman and expert marksman. He enjoyed traditional archery, hunting, hiking, camping, fishing, muzzle loading, U.S. and world history, reading, and telling stories. He was most himself in the woods and could always find his way home without getting panicky. Quoting Daniel Boone, Hunter said, "I got a might turned around a time or two, but I never got lost."
He was a member of First Christian Church, Jacksonville, FL, and Western Kentucky University Veterans on Campus, a life member of the National Rifle Association, Traditional Bow Hunters of Florida, North Florida Archers, Stump Bluff Militia & Possum Branch Backwoodsmen, and the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Amy Pace Hunter, St. Johns, FL, and the following:
Three children: Major Samuel F. Hunter III, USAR and his wife, Angela Hunter, of Glasgow, KY; Sarah Hunter-Smith, and her husband, Denny Smith, of Atlanta, GA; and Lieutenant Commander Nathaniel L. Hunter, USN and his wife, Adriana Hunter, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL;
Five grandchildren: Samuel F. Hunter IV, Glasgow, KY; Turner Jackson and Kathlyn Samantha Ruth Smith, Atlanta, GA; and Noah Robert and Jonah Elijah Hunter, Palm Beach Gardens, FL;
His mother: Dorothy Spear Hunter, and his sister, Melody Kitchens, both of Bowling Green, KY;
And a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
