A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at First Christian Church in Columbia.

Mary Alice "Marci" Merchant was daughter of the late Ival Arthur Merchant and Iza White Merchant. Her birth on July 13, 1937, was in the Iowa college town of Ames, where she lived from infancy through college.

Marci began attending Iowa State University, ISU, in 1955 after she graduated from Ames High School. ISU introduced her to the Gamma Phi Beta sorority, Naiads synchronized swimming team, YMCA and the University Singers. During college summer breaks she was a residential camp counselor, swimming teacher and lifeguard in Wisconsin and Iowa.

During her sophomore year of college, she met Gene Lamoureaux, a junior and her future husband, at a church meeting. Marci earned her Bachelor of Science degree from ISU on May 29, 1959, and was married to Gene Lamoureaux on July 18, 1959.

After moving to Columbus, Ind., as newlyweds, she joined Gene in the work force as the director of the Columbus Girls Club.

Marci went on to earn a master's degree in home economics education/child development from the University of Missouri in Columbia.

After she obtained her master's of education she worked mornings at the First Baptist Church of Columbia Child Development Center for 2½ years, from 1971 to 1973.

In January 1974 she joined the faculty of Columbia Public Schools as a part-time early childhood careers instructor with the Columbia Area Vocational School. At this time the program was located in Hickman High School.

Marci helped initiate the New Directions Center for adults seeking career counseling in 1978. She gradually obtained state of Missouri school certification by taking graduate courses at MU during summer school and evenings. The NDC was part of Columbia Public Schools' adult education department.

She also worked for a number of years as the guidance counselor at the Columbia Area Career Center. Marci's vocational career guidance philosophy partially included teacher support, student counseling, and visits to classrooms, shops or work sites. She planned career days at CACC and field trips to Nichols Career Center, Moberly Area Community College and other educational institutions. She also helped professionals develop videos, brochures and displays featuring career center students.

Marci introduced the CACC to West and Jefferson Junior High School social studies students. She planned and arranged CACC field trips for Hallsville, Ashland, Hickman, Rock Bridge, Douglass and Christian Fellowship high school students.

Recognition for her professional efforts include plaques from the following organizations: Outstanding Vocational Guidance and Counseling Award, 1988-1989, from the Missouri Placement Association and Missouri School Counselor Association; Outstanding Educator of the Year, University of Missouri-Columbia, Administrative Services, May 10, 1990; Altrusa Club of Columbia, 1993 to 1994; Columbia Board of Education, May 1, 1997; In Appreciation of Dedicated Service to the Mid-Missouri School Counselor Association, Oct. 7, 1997; Columbia Area Career Center, 1997.

Marci always considered serving her church a priority, and she felt honored when asked to serve as deacon and elder.

Special joys during Marci's life have included the fellowship of women dedicated to the improvement of humanity.

She was a active member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter IT; Altrusa Club of Columbia; Phi Lambda Theta Chapter; Gamma Phi Beta; and Fortnightly Club; traveling with her family, Columbia Ski Club, MU Tourin' Tigers and Elderhostels were enriching life events.

She truly appreciated and enjoyed gardening, reading, genealogy and Columbia's rich cultural life.

Mary Alice "Marci" Lower is survived by her son, Jim Lamoureaux; grandchildren Cory, Allison and Alex Lamoureaux, all of Minneapolis; son Mike Lamoureaux; sister Nancy Lysen Kirtley, brother-in-law Jack Kirtley of Columbia; brother Dr. James Merchant and sister-in-law Dr. Mary Merchant; and seven nieces and nephews.
