HARDIN
Col. Ben Lee Hardin, aged 81 years, died Saturday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. Hal Grimes, and Mr. Grimes, from the effect of injuries he received in a fall several weeks ago. He started downstairs for his evening paper, made a misstep at the top and fell to the bottom, suffering a broken shoulder and arm, and shock from which he was unable to rally. Col. Hardin was an outstanding figure in this community. A man of brilliant intellect and an ever-ready fund of humor, he was in demand as a public speaker, and during his years of activity was called all over the State to be on the programs at political and social gatherings. He came of brilliant pioneer lineage, being the son of Judge Parker Hardin and Carolyn Watkins, and was born at Columbia, Ky., July 21, 1844. He chose the legal profession in which so many men of his family had outstanding careers. After preparing himself for the law he settled in Harrodsburg to practice his profession. That was about 65 years ago, making him at the time of his death the senior member of the Harrodsburg bar. He was married to Miss Sue Lewis Cardwell, of this place, in 1866, three children having blessed their union, James Cardwell and Ben Lee, Jr., who died as children, and Mrs. J. Hal Grimes, who survives him. His wife passed away several years ago. One sister, Mrs. Bettie Hatcher, of Louisville, also survives him, who was here with him several days before the end. Two granddaughters, Miss Carolyn Grimes, of Harrodsburg, and Mrs. George Chinn, Jr. of Hickory, N.C. are also left.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, where he had been a member of 35 years. The services were conducted by Dr. J. J. Rice, of Danville, a former pastor, assisted by Rev. T. Hassell Bowen, pastor of the Christian church. The pall bearers were relatives and family connections, Messrs. W. W. Ensminger, George W. Edwards, Eben Hardin, George Chinn, Sr., N. B. Smith and Dr. J. B. RoBards. The church was filled with sorrowing friends; members of the Harrodsburg and Danville bars, and the court house officials attending in a body. Col. Hardin was also a Mason of long standing and member of the order from Harrodsburg and other points in the county attended in regalia, and had charge of the burial at Spring Hill Cemetery.
