Husband of the late Patricia Lyles (nee Nolan), son of the late Claude E Lyles and Dorothy Heidger Lyles. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his two brothers Claude E Lyles Jr, Gordon T (Carol) Lyles, and a nephew, Thomas Lyles. Surviving are two nephews Claude E (Linda) Lyles III, John (Julia) Lyles; seven nieces Joan (James) Chenault, Diane Boliaux, Valerie Drane (John) Bellman, Patricia (John) Wanko, Suzanne Frisella, Theresa Kettenbrink, and Janean (William) Hensley. Joe is a graduate of St. Mary's (Southside Catholic) High School where he was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1996. Coach Joe was on the faculty of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA for 50 years, coaching varsity baseball for 20 years, varsity soccer for 17 years and was the coordinator of 15 club sports when he retired in 2009. He attended St. Louis University where he was a member of the 1948-49 N.I.T. championship basketball team. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Springfield College in Springfield, MA. In 1949 he left St. Louis University to play professional baseball in the St. Louis Browns organization for five years and professional basketball for four years with the St. Louis Bombers, as well as Washington and Chicago organizations. In 1952, Joe went on a world tour visiting 44 countries as a member of the US All-Stars versus the Harlem Globetrotters.
