Son of John Benson and Jane Maloy, husband of Bridget A. Walsh and father of Alice A., John Joseph, Mary Ann, Frank Edward, Joseph A., Helen Angus and Margaret M. Benson. Grandson of John Benson and Catherine.

In 1870, John Benson, aged 8, was living in West Troy, NY, in the home of his parents, John Benson, aged 39, and Jane Benson, aged 35, with siblings, Catherine Benson, aged 14, Sarah Benson, aged 12, Ann E. Benson, aged 10, Ellen Benson, aged 6, Patrick H. Benson, aged 4, and Francis Benson, aged 4. His father was shown to be a carpenter.

In 1880, John Benson, aged 17, a laborer, was living in West Troy, NY in the home of his parents, John Benson, aged 48, and Jane Benson, aged 42, with siblings, Catherine Riley, aged 24, widowed, and Ellen Benson, aged 14, who both worked in a collar shop, Francis Benson, aged 10, and niece, Sarah Riley, aged 4. His father was shown to be a carpenter.

In 1900, John Benson, aged 36, was living at 2326 Broadway, NY, with his wife, Bridget Benson, aged 35, and children, Alice Benson, aged 10, John Benson, aged 8, Mary Benson, aged 7, Frank Benson, aged 5, and Joseph Benson, aged 9 months. John, the elder, was shown to be a carpenter.

In 1910, John F. Benson, aged 47, was living at 2326 Broadway, Watervliet, NY, with his wife, Bridget Benson, aged 46, and children, Alice Benson, aged 19, John J. Benson, aged 18, Mary Benson, aged 16, Frank E. Benson, aged 14, Joseph Benson, aged 10, Helen Benson, aged 6, and Margaret Benson, aged 3. John, the elder, was shown to be a carpenter in a factory.

In 1930, J.F. Benson, aged 65, was living on Broadway, Watervliet, NY, with his wife, Bridget Benson, aged 65, and children, Helen A. Benson, aged 25, Margaret M. Benson, aged 22, and Alice A. (Benson) Lambert, aged 40. John was shown to be a clerk for the railroad.

Obituary - John Benson of 236 Broadway, Watervliet, died in the Troy Hospital of injuries after being struck by an automobile. He was employed as a collector on the Watervliet-Green Island toll bridge and was walking home at the time of the accident. Previously his trade was carpentry and ten years ago he became a toll collector. He was a member of St. Patrick’'s Church, Watervliet. Surviving are his wife, formerly Bridget Walsh; three sons, John of Northside, Cohoes, and Joseph and Frank Benson, of Watervliet; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Carroll, Mrs. Alice Lambert, Misses Helen and Margaret Benson, all of Watervliet; a niece, Mrs. Sarah Nelson of Albany, and five grandchildren.
