Rosa Lee Black Massey, daughter of the late Theodore and Mary (Lottie) Black, was born Nov. 30, 1917, in Sumter. She departed this life and entered heavenly rest on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

"Rose," as she was so often referred to, received her education in the public schools of Sumter. As a young child, she joined St. Luke AME Church along with her parents and siblings. She moved to New York and became affiliated with Cornerstone Baptist Church until 1953 when she met and married the love of her life.

They became members of Evening Star Baptist Church, where she served on the usher board and the pastor's aide committee. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and served as matron for several years.

Mrs. Massey was employed by the Eugene Doll Co. for a number of years, later devoting her life and love to caring for foster children until her retirement in 1989.

She and her husband returned to Sumter and she renewed her membership with St. Luke AME Church, where she served on the usher board and willingly gave of her service in other areas of the church until her health declined.

Her precious memory will be cherished by her loving and devoted husband, Willie J. Massey of Sumter; one brother, Frank (Mena) Mills; two adopted sons, Andre Massey and Rozell Brown; four sisters-in-law, the Rev. Eliza Black, Susie (Willie) Johnson, Geneva Herbert and Alberta Powell; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Alexander, Waiters and Theodore; and two sisters, Mabel and Alma.
