Elbert Granville Drew was born November 1, 1867, at Hannibal, Missouri. At the age of 17 he left Englewood High School and took a position as telegraph repairman on the D & E I Railroad. During his three years in this position he became a proficient telegraph opeator. He also studied evenings at the Chicago Athaneum. At 20 he was made commercial telegrapher and in a few months more became train dispatcher.

He married Harrriet E. Stebbins on November 8, 1888, and immediately moved to Danville, Ilinois, the new dispatching office. After a year there, Elbert took a position as Lumber Agent at Chicago to better himself. Here he learned stenography in spare time. In October, 1890, he entered service in the Chicago Telephone Company as a stenographer. Later he held the potions as chief clerk, Claim Agent, Right of Way Agen, Supervisor of Suburban Exchanges, Purchasing and Supply Agent. The Western Electric Company assumed these latter functions in 1900 and he was transferred to the position of Assistant Auditor, Accounting Department. He was in that department for 19 years and took an active part in the promoting of comrandeship amongst employes, establishing one of the first emplyees' benefit association in the telephone field. He was elected Secretary and Assistant Treasurer of the Company in 1920.

He is fond of using tools, having built his own summer cottage at White Lake, Michigan, also two sail boats. He is a lover of music and plays the violin. One of his special hobbies is pictorial art. Prior to 1915 he visited the art galleries and occasionally made small water colors in a crude way. In 1916 he engaged an artist, Mr. E. J. Timmons, to teach him to sketch. In 1919, to show his friends what he was doing, he gave a little exhibition in Evanston, Illinois. He was asked to loan this exhibition to the Telephone Company. Out of this exhibition in the Bell Forum grew a sketch club of telephone employees. Upon the suggestion of Mr. K. A. Buehr that a club of business men painters would be of great benefit, Elbert and E. S. Barrie invinted a number of amateurs to a meeting at the Hamilton Club on March 19, 1920, and the Business Men's Art Club was launched forthwith. Elbert served as its President for three years. This organization has become a factor in art life of the city and has 170 members and a club studio. In 1924 the interest shown by men in other cities in the Business Men's Art Club idea led to his organizing the Associated Amateur Art Clubs, a society purely for missionary work in promoting art as a hobby for business men. As Vice President of this association, he has been instrumentl in launching several clubs. Elbert in 1923 was elected President of the Municipal Art League of Chicago where he served one year. Temporary loss of voice necessitated his giving up this work, but he has since been elected a director of the League. Many of Elbert's paintings have been hung at the Art Institute.

In church affairs Elbert has been active and was had of the Finance and Building Committee of the new Auburn Park, M. E. Church. For several years he was on the Board of Management of Central Y.M.C.A. He has acted for a long time on the High School C. I. Clubs committee of the Chicago Assocation of Commerce. He served a year as president of the North Shore Neighborhood Club, Evanston. He is a member of the Cliff Dwellers Club, Chicago.
