Vera Miles Springer, 90, of Portland died Monday, Nov. 2012. She was born and raised on a 160-acre farm near the Mountain View Grange in Benton County. Her parents were Edmund T. Miles and Alma Christensen. Vera graduated from Corvallis High School in 1938 at age 16 and was proud of her Welsh and Danish forbearers. An accomplished horsewoman, she owned and raised horses for decades. Vera met Sam Springer in Portland where she was attending business college and they married in December 1940. Both were to work in the Portland Kaiser shipyards and to serve in the U.S. Navy (Sam) and U.S. Marine Corps (Vera) during World War II. Vera had lost both her parents early -- and her closest family was her two older half-brothers, Archie and Atlee Miles. Sons Richard (1948) and Tom (1949) arrived at the Springer home on Mt. Scott while Vera was attending adult classes at Reed College. There she met lifelong friend, Elizabeth Ducey and many young Democrats. Vera worked for 12 years for U.S. Senators Richard and Maurine Neuberger in their Washington, D.C. and Portland district office (1954-1966). She was honored to help create the Oregon Dunes National Seashore. She then worked as a writer and editor for the Environmental Protection Agency and Bonneville Power Administration. At BPA, she wrote and edited a history of the agency published in 1976. After retirement, she volunteered with the Oregon Environmental Council on energy and conservation issues. Gov. Bob Straub appointed her to serve on the Willamette River Greenway Commission in 1976. Vera and Sam enjoyed many years of retirement traveling often overseas and to the Southwest prior to his death in June 1998. They enjoyed their grandchildren Josh and Tess Springer with whom they shared a love for adventure, black Labradors and their summer home on Sauvie Island. Richard, Tom, Josh and Tess all survive.
