John Wesley Zellotis Bliss died while attempting to cross the frozen Ohio River on foot from Mt Vernon, Indiana to Kentucky late at night. He apparently died of drowning or exposure when he broke through the ice. His hat and a basket he was carrying were found on the ice. His body was not recovered until June of 1905 and was identified by his watch and jacket clinging to the remains. He is likely buried in Smith Mills Cemetery where his mother is buried.

The photo of the man with the dog is not John Wesley Bliss who died in 1905 but is John Wesley Bliss the son of William Henry Bliss and Elizabeth Bellinger. He was the nephew of the man portrayed in this memorial and he died in 1943. The clothing and type of photo were not used in 1905.
