Our precious Lord took the hand of our beloved, Pearl Wells Peterson, Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence. Born on Oct. 12, 1931, in Mayesville, she was the fourth of 13 children of the late Junious and Celie Wells.

Pearl received her formal education at Mayesville High School. After attending high school, she moved to New York City, N.Y., where she met Henry Peterson at the age of 19, the man with whom she would spend the rest of her life.

Once living in New York City, Pearl started training for bridge and toll collector, but chooe to start a career with the United States Postal Service, where she worked for many years.

Pearl received many awards such as the special achievement award and the certificate of appreciation award. Upon retiring, Pearl received a gold watch for her many years of dedicated services.

Pearl served as a faithful member of the usher board, treasurer and a willing worker of the Free Will Baptist Church, Freeport, Long Island, N.Y., under the leadership of the founding pastor, the Rev. Rainie Addison.

Upon returning to South Carolina, she served in the church as a pastor's aid and member of the Women Missionary Society at Unionville AME Church.

She leaves to cherish her memories and celebrate her legacy: a devoted and loving husband, Henry Peterson; three sons, Dennis (Mattie) Wells, Calvin Wells and Steve Wells; three grandchildren, Chanel, Christopher and Niema Wells, all of New York; four sisters, Neddie (Carlisle) Lesane, Frances Dean of Sumter, Ida Wilson, and Julia (William) Brown of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Elias (Mildred) Wells; sisters-in-law, Lucille Peterson of Dillon and Sue Mae Wells of Mayesville; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Sam Wells; one brother, Ben Wells; and three sisters, Sarah Parrott, Tesline Parrott and Ether Moore.

Burial will be in the Unionville AME Churchyard cemetery, Mayesville.
