Chester L. Boren, Ed.D., 78, of Centralia passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at his home.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at First Christian Church in Centralia with the Rev. Joe Jimerson officiating. Following the services, a visitation will start at 3 p.m. at Centralia Country Club.
He was born Feb. 5, 1932, in Leonard, the son of the late Thomas and Virginia Gillespie Boren. On May 20, 1954, he was united in marriage to Nancy Cundiff. Nancy survives at the home.
Dr. Boren was valedictorian of Leonard High School Class of 1950. He graduated from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (Truman State University) in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science in education, where he also served as president of Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity. Then he graduated from Northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College in 1957 with a Master of Arts degree. Later he graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1971 with a doctorate in education. He served as superintendent of Centralia R-VI schools from 1963 to 1986. He received the Missouri Association of School Administrators Award of Merit for Outstanding Leadership in 1983. He served as president of the Northeast District Teacher’s Association and served as an assessor for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Leadership Academy. He received the Outstanding CTA/MSTA School Administrator Award for the 1985-1986 school year. Then he received a resolution from the Missouri state Senate upon his retirement from the Centralia R-VI school district, and in 1986, in his honor, Centralia Middle School was renamed Chester Boren Middle School. He was a member of the Masons and Shriners for more than 50 years. He also was a member of the Centralia Rotary Club, where he served as president in 1966 to 1967 and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He attended First Christian Church in Centralia and was an avid golfer and hunter.
In addition to his wife Nancy of 56 years, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by two daughters, Debora Ripley and her husband, Pete, and Kathy Wright and her husband, Jeff, all of Fulton; one son, Thomas Boren and his wife, Suzanne, of Columbia; one sister, Rosalie Craigmyle of Shelbyville; six grandchildren, Olive Humphrey, Spencer Humphrey, Jessica Wright, Megan Buschjost, Alexander Boren and Nathaniel Boren; other relatives and many dear friends.
