The Putman family is believe to be of Dutch origin. In early records the name is often found spelled both as Putnam and Putman.

Daniel is the son of John and Jane (Stull) Putman - who were married in Frankford, Sussex, New Jersey on June 18, 1797. Daniel's parents moved from their native state of NJ to what was at that time Steuben (now Schuyler) County, NY between 1800 and 1810. For this reason it is unknown if Daniel was born in NJ or in NY.

Daniel married Temperance, and together they had three known children: Sarah Jane (1835), John (abt 1836) and Andrew (1838) Putman. This family is found on the 1830 census in Orange, Steuben, NY with two adults and three children under the age of 5 living in the household. Tragically two years later, at the age of 35 years, 3 months, 4 days, Daniel was killed by a falling tree. His wife's death followed soon after his, and their son John died on April 21, 1845.

Sarah J Putman was raised by her paternal grandparents, married Henry Losey, and had three children: Charles, Amelia and Edward. She died in 1873 and is interred at Altay Baptist Church Cemetery. Andrew Putman was adopted by the Bliven family, married, and had one daughter: Frankie. Andrew was killed at the age of 24 while serving in the Civil War and is interred here with his father.
