Marlow was one of twelve children born to Charles Newton Graves and Louisa S. Smith. The family moved to Dodge County, Wisconsin, around 1855.

He served as a private in the 13th U.S. Infantry, Company A, during the Civil War from 1862-1865.

Shortly after returning from the war, he married Mary Jane Downs in Waupon, Dodge Co., Wisconsin, and they had one daughter, Ella Graves. After the death of his wife, he spent most of the remainder of his life living with various siblings in Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. He died in the Soldier's Home in Minneapolis.
