Born September 16, 1947 in Santiago, Cuba, Dr. Ravelo left his homeland over 50 years ago as a 13-year-old refugee. During this time (1960 - 1961) 14,000 + unaccompanied Cuban children fled the Castro Regime. These children were brought to Miami, Florida via "Peter Pan Project" sponsored by the United Way and Catholic charities. Good luck and family prayers placed Bert under guardianship of the exiled Cuban Jesuits in Miami. After being forced out of Cuba the Jesuits reestablished Belen Preparatory School in Miami, Florida. Bert was one of the first to gain entrance as a boarding student. Without financial means or family support, Dr. Ravelo succeeded academically. He graduated Salutatorian from Belen in 1964. He completed his undergraduate degree from Marquette Univeristy, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1968. Dr Ravelo went on to earn his medical degree at the medical college of Wisconsin (formerly Marquette School of Medicine). Because he wished to specialize in cardiac and thoracic surgery, he completed a six-year general surgery residence at the University of Alabama Hospitals and Clinic in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Ravelo's post graduate training was completed at the Univeristy of Pennsylvania in 1980. Over the past 33 years, Dr. Ravelo practiced cardiac and thoracic surgery in the Long Beach area at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, Miller Children's Hospital and Lakewood Regional Medical Center. He was a member of the parish council at St. Cornelius Catholic Church and he was well-known and loved by his neighbors to whom he gave freely of his knowledge and love. Dr. Ravelo is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Kathryn and his brother, Dr. Juan Ravelo of Sanford, Florida. He was preceded in death by his sister, Gloria and his parents. A rosary and visitation will be held Friday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Luyben Family Dilday-Mottell Mortuary, 5161 Arbor Rd., Long Beach. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday, November 3 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Cornelius Catholic Church, 5500 East Wardlow Rd., Long Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests tax deductible donations be made to Beat the Odds - a comprehensive cancer survivorship program. To make donations, go to www.beat-theodds.org or call, (562) 933-4483.
