For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were disolved we have a building of God an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Corinthians 5:1

And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: yea saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours: and their works do follow them. Rev. 14:13.

A most wholesome earthly life has ended for Deacon Dan Henderson. He blessed the union of Ethel and Elbert Henderson March 10, 1914, in Lake Providence, LA. His mother having died when he was a very small boy, Mama Rachel, his grandmother, reared him. As a growing lad and on into adulthood, Dan was nurtured and given much love by his siblings, Louis, Richard, and Roperia --all who proceeded him in death. Deacon Dan once stated, "They spoiled me rotten!"

We, the Mt. Zion Baptist Church family, are most knowledgeable of his confession of a hope in Christ, for he so spiritually and so often spoke, "August 14, 1934, LATE one Friday evening, down on St. John's grudge ditch, I met HIM, and ONE day I'm going HOME! And don't you WORRY 'bout ME!

To know Deacon Dan is to love him, for he greeted everyone with a smile and a hug. His most prized possession was "the children." His Beginner Class at Mt. Zion and the East Carroll Baptist Association was his championed task! One can invision the "little ones" gathering around him as he strictly but lovingly instructs them to "Speak loud! Stand up straight! Hold your head up! Deacon Dan wore many hats at Mt. Zion --teacher, deacon, usher, choir advisor, custodian, to name a few, and being directed by God mastered all of them.

Deacon Dan was the one remaining earthly link to the "Old Mt. Zion Dynasty," and humanly we, his children who are now teens, young adults, and adults wept his homegoing --only for a season! For Deacon Dan taught us and he taught us well to be STRONG in the Lord; to be ENCOURAGED; to be of GOOD CHEER! Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the MORNING. And so, when the MORNING comes, Deacon Dan, we'll be so HAPPY!

Too, being very industrious Mr. Dan, as he was so fondly called by many, worked as a cashier for A.J. and Lillie Marshall and as a custodian for the East Carroll Parish School System. Needless to say, he was highly respected by all, and when he spoke everybody listened. For many years Deacon Dan's voice in prayer and praise was a welcomed anchor coming from KLPL Sunday morning gospel as he played Zion recordings. Numberless are the local church choirs who appeared on his gospel program. In all his ways, Deacon Dan acknowledged the soverignty of God!

However, in September, 1972, Deacon Dan's pride and joy was granted to him in the person of his lovely bride, Izena. Together they reared three boys, Kerrington, Joey, and Dominic. For his family, Deacon Dan provided love, serenity, and security. When he spoke of Izena and their family, one could see that Mr. Dan's expressions were an adoration and exuberance that spoke, "I Love You Truly!"

On July 27, 2002, at 3:15 p.m. at East Carroll Parish Hospital, Deacon Dan went to the land that is fairer than day! By faith he saw it afar, for the Father waits over the way. In the sweet by and by we shall meet Deacon Dan on that beautiful shore!

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 2 Cor. 5:8.

GOD'S GARDEN HAD NEED OF A LITTLE FLOWER,
IT HAD GROWN FOR A TIME HERE BELOW,
BUT IN TENDER LOVE HE TOOK IT ABOVE,
IN A LOVIER GARDEN TO GROW.

IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN MARRED HAD HE LEFT IT BELOW,
ALTHOUGH WE HAD TENDED WITH CARE,
HAD TILLED AND WATERED AND HEDGED ABOUT,
WATCHING EACH PETAL FAIR.

THERE WITH HIS SMILE FOR THE SUNBEAMS
IT WILL GROW TO PERFECTION OF BLOOM,
NO WITHERING BLIGHT OR DESTRUCTIVE STORM
TO CRUSH OUT ITS SWEET PERFUME.

PERHAPS, SOMETIMES, IN THE QUIET HOURS,
WE SHALL NOTICE ITS SWEET PERFUME
STEAL SOFTLY DOWN FROM THE HEAVENLY PLACE,
"TILL IT SEEMS TO FILL THE ROOM".

THEN THE EARTHLY SPOT WILL SEEM LESS BARE
AS WE THINK OF THE TIME TO COME,
WHEN WE SHALL ENTER THE GARDEN FAIR,
AND FIND OUR TRANSPLANTED BLOOM.
