As a teenager, I came to know him in the summer of about 1960. I became a Citadel cadet in the fall of 1962. As an upperclassman, Jim proudly allowed me to use his cadet sword for cadet parades until I was able to afford my own well into my senior year.

He is James D. Riel, II, named for his grandfather who died in 1943, HERE.

Born "up north", Jim came to Charleston from Fremont, Ohio & was a Citadel graduate, class of 1937. After some years in California, he and his beloved wife, Eloise Green Riel and daughters Susan and Debbie, moved to Sumter. He was foreman at B. L. Montague Co., a locally owned structural steel manufacturing company in Sumter. His obituary (probably the Sumter Daily Item) follows:

Jim died Wednesday at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. He was a son of the late Frank James Riel, Sr. and Edna Southam Riel. He was a class of 1937 graduate of The Citadel. He served as a lieutenant colonel in the African and European theaters during World War II. Mr. Riel was also owner of an engineering firm, Details Bi-Riel. He was a member of the Fellowship Literary Society and Shiloh United Methodist Church. He was known to all as a "character."

Survivors include his wife, Eloise Green Riel of Sumter; two daughters, Susan Riel Silverman (Jason) of Rock Hill and Debbie Riel Nix of Dalzell; a brother, Dr. Frank James Riel Jr. of San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren, Lt. Andrew James Nix of San Antonio, Texas, Scott Clinton Nix of Dalzell and Alexander James Silverman of Rock Hill; and a host of nephews and nieces (Jim was the favorite Uncle to Linda Green Suber).

Memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Shiloh, with the Rev. John Bauknight officiating, assisted by the Rev. Gordon Timmons.

The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service at the church, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the S.C. Chapter, Leukemia Society of America, 261-B Riverchase Way, Lexington, S.C. 29072.

The above includes information from obituaries published in the Jan. 30th issue of The Sumter Item and the Jan. 31st issue of The State newspaper.
