Larry Eugene Hayes
(July 15, 1949 - August 1, 2012)

Larry Eugene Hayes made the short journey from Toledo Bend to Heaven on August 1st, 2012, passing from one place of peace to the other in his sleep. A memorial service will be held at 10am this Saturday, August 4th, at First Lutheran Church, at 301 W. Farrell Rd., Lafayette, LA. Pastor Nancy Andrews will be conducting the service; attendees will be encouraged to share their stories and remembrances in his honor.

Larry "Gabby" Hayes was born in Shreveport on July 15th, 1949, the firstborn child of Jeffereson "Gene" Hayes and Emily Loretta Hayes, nee Ashby. He was raised in Blanchard, LA and graduated from Fair Park High School in 1967. He attended Louisiana Technical College until he began his career with the US Army Corps of Engineers in October 1970.

Larry was a dedicated lifelong employee of the Corps; his first position was that of Survey Rodman, and he retired in December 2011 as a Senior Construction Representative, after more than 40 years of service. During his tenure he participated in emergency operations all over the country, from earthquakes in California to Midwestern flooding, and every hurricane to hit the Gulf Coast. He earned numerous awards, notably several "Commanders" Awards and the Steel de Fleury Medal.

Larry was an avid sportsman in many senses- in addition to being an active fisherman and deer hunter, he also played softball for years before becoming one of SLYSI's first fast-pitch coaches. He was a regular support of UL Athletics, as well as the Atlanta Braves and Dallas Cowboys.

He was a beloved father of four daughters, who knew him as both a patriarch and friend. He attended games, plays, graduations, weddings and christenings, and was unwavering in his love and support. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Peggy Hayes, and his daughters: MSgt Shelly Gent, with her husband SMSgt Christopher Gent and their son Evan; SMSgt Christy Hayes; Jamie Hayes, with her fiancé Shawn Guthrie and their children Aiden and Kaylee; and Laurie Hayes. Survivors also include his father, Gene, and three siblings: Paul and Roger Hayes, and Lori Lawson. He is preceded in death by his mother, Loretta. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his honor to the American Heart Association.
