Our beautiful mother opened her eyes one last time, reached for her husband of 68 years, mouthed the words, " I love you," and then went home to the arms of our Savior on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012. She had been in failing health for many years, but due to the bountiful mercy of our lord and the loving care of her husband, her family was blessed with her presence for 20 more years.

Evelyn Popp was born on Feb. 10, 1921, in Ucross, Wyo., to John Jacob and Mary Elizabeth (Lackman) Popp. She was the seventh child in a family of 10 children. She would become a child of God when she was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Ranchester, Wyo., on March 13, 1921, and she would live a life devoted to her faith and Savior.

At an early age, the family moved to Billings and eventually farmed on Central Avenue near the present Target location. She attended schools in Billings until the age of 15 when she assumed the responsibility of homemaker for her five brothers and father upon the death of her mother.

On Oct. 6, 1944, she married Victor Hergett at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Billings and they were blessed with three daughters. They would raise their girls in a home filled with love, laughter and a strong commitment to God.

Evelyn's greatest joy in life was her family and she treasured the times when everyone was together. Over the years she took in many family members and cared for them as her own. Before her eyesight failed, she enjoyed working crossword puzzles, crocheting, embroidering and watching Jeopardy. She was an avid sport enthusiast and could be a fierce competitor when she was personalty involved. She especially enjoyed the game of golf until her health would no longer permit it.

Those who have gone before her and were waiting to greet her were her parents; sisters, Lydia Wegner, Amalia (Molly) Wegner, Leoda and Amelia Popp; brothers, Alec, Edward, Herman and Jake Popp. Also preceding her in death were sisters-in-law, Bertha, Sarah, Freda and Lola Popp, Frieda Wehr, Rose Holmes and Marie Fox. Brothers-in-law include Edward and Rudy Wegner, Richard and Karl Hergett, Willard Wehr and Maurice Holmes.

Left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband and her beloved daughters and spouses Cheryl (Mike) Horning of Laurel, Vicki (Dan) Kenyon of Boyd and Sandra (Jerry) Nypen of Lonsdale, Minn., and her brother Walter Popp of Billings. She is survived by eight grandchildren: Scott (Connie) Horning, Ryan Horning (fiancee Valerie Robertson), Tracy (Shawn) Berry, Tony (Callie) Kenyon, Ross (Tawyna) Kenyon, Jaimi Kenyon, Jared (Andrea) Nypen and Carina Nypen. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren and many special nephew and nieces who knew her as Aunt Evie.

The family would like to thank Pastor Pullman, the third floor staff at St. Vincent's Healthcare, especially Jill and Kim, for their loving and compassionate care of our wife and mother and their tremendous support for our family.

Visitation will start at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel, and a Vigil Service will start at 7 p.m. A celebration of her life will be Monday, Nov. 26, at 10 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Laurel, with a reception following committal services at the Laurel Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 908 Fifth Ave., Laurel, MT 59044.
