Deseret News, The (Salt Lake City, UT) - November 1, 2001. Obituary: Mae Richards Fotheringham. Mae Taylor Richards Fotheringham, born April 12, 1913, passed from this life peacefully on Sunday, October 28, 2001, due to complications of Alzheimer's Disease. To those who knew her for any of the 82 years before that Alzheimer's struggle, she was a bright, vibrant, caring, fun person with a genuine zest for life. Mae was the oldest child of Stayner and Jane Taylor Richards. She graduated from the University of Utah where she affiliated with Delta Gamma, won a letter in basketball, and earned a degree in elementary education. She taught school for a year and then married Theron William Fotheringham in the Salt Lake Temple on September 6, 1935. While raising her family Mae served in many callings as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including president of her ward's Relief Society, Young Women's and Primary auxiliaries. She edited and published more ward newsletters than she would care to admit, and wrote and published a book on the life of her father. After the children were raised, she and Theron served a mission to Virginia 1978-1980. Ever the teacher, Mae spent a lifetime gently correcting her children and grandchildren who were lazy in the use of proper possessives, grammar or syntax. She took up golf the last half of her life and enjoyed the extra time it gave her with Theron. She was a good enough sport to continue taking her turn at bat (into her early 70's) in the cow pasture softball games at family reunions in the Pines Ranch above Oakley, where her father built a family cabin. She loved spending summers there as a girl, and enjoyed going back all her adult life. She leaves a rich legacy of love, faith and service for her family to follow.

Mae is survived by her husband and all her children: Theron Stephen (Darla), St. George, UT, currently serving a mission in England for The Church of Jesus Christ; Suzanne Clark, Las Vegas, NV, currently serving a mission in Salt Lake City for the Church of Jesus Christ; Robert Stayner (Kathy), Salt Lake City; and Patricia (Andy) Loewi, Denver, CO; 18 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and the following brothers and sisters likewise survive her: Marian R. Landward, G. William (Claire) Richards, Nancy R. (John) Poulton, Lee G. Richards, and sister-in-law Margaret C. Richards.

Her parents, a brother, Robert Stayner Richards, and sister-in-law Hazel Richards preceded her in death. The family deeply appreciates the compassion shown by the staff at Brighton Gardens care facility. Funeral services will be held Saturday Nov. 3, 2001 at Noon at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive. Viewing will be from 6 {150} 8 p.m. on Friday, and one hour prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either the Muscular Dystrophy Assoc. (Samantha Loewi Fund), 720 So. Colorado Blvd., Suite 450, Denver CO, or the Autism Society of Utah (Jason Fund), 668 So. 1300 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84102.
