Actress. She is best remembered for her portrayal of the sharp-tongued mother-in-law Mrs. Gibson on the television sitcom "The Honeymooners." Born Ethel Waite, she began her career on the stage touring in stock companies around the United States. Quite often, she was typecast in roles such as wives, mothers, old maids, educators, secretaries, villainesses, maids, society matrons, nurses, and matriarchs. She appeared in such stage productions as "The Primrose Path," "Dinner at Eight," "The Philadelphia Story," "Private Lives," "The Lady With the Green Hat," "Say It With Music," "Anything Goes," "The Little Foxes," "Brewster's Millions," "Our Town," "The Glass Menagerie," "Mother Carey's Chickens," "The Mousetrap," "Death of a Salesman," "Witness for the Prosecution," "Dear, Ruth," "Showboat," "Angel Street," "Brigadoon," "Oklahoma!," and "Three's a Family". During the advent of television, she flourished as a household name appearing in various guest spots on such syndicated sitcoms as "The Morey Amsterdam Show," "The Larry Storch Show," "Mr. District Attorney," "Kraft Theatre," "The Jackie Gleason Show," "Inner Sanctum," and "Robert Montgomery Presents." During her career, she was a member of the Theatre Guild, was supportive of the Motion Picture and Television Fund, was supportive of the Democratic party, was a theatrical instructor for both the Pasadena Playhouse and The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, was the mother of actress Pamela Britton, and she was married to veterinarian Raymond G. Owens from 1919 until his death in 1926 and insurance executive John Almy from 1949 until his death in 1967. In 1956, she retired from acting and relocated to the south where she spent the next four decades of her life devoted to family and charitable causes.
