Daughter of John P. and Hannah (Gilson) Thompson. Wife of David G. Alter. (Information from the Pennsylvvania Gravestones website and the Port Royal, PA 200th anniversary website.)

MRS. BELLE THOMPSON ALTER, widow of the late D. G. Alter, died at her home on Market Street, Port Royal, Sunday evening October 16, [1927], after a lingering illness of several years duration. She was aged 82 years. Mrs. Alter was one of the few surviving Volunteer Nurses of the Civil War. She was a member of the Port Royal Presbyterian Church for many years and always a faithful and earnest worker. She is survived by her two sons and three daughters, James T. & D. Boyd Alter of New Bloomfield, Mrs. C. K. Comely of Port Royal; Mrs. Percival Hills of Nutley, NJ, and Mrs. Parker McMeen of Washington, DC. Funeral services were held from her late home Wednesday afternoon at 2 PM, conducted by her pastor Rev. J. L. Robinson, after which interment was made in the Church Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Belle Alter was Miss Belle Thompson and served as a volunteer nurse beginning her work in the Taylor house, which was used as a hospital in Winchester, Virginia, September 1864 and was assigned to duty by the surgeon in charge, Dr. S. Sharpe.

She assisted in caring for the wounded from Frohus Hill and Cedar Creek battlefields, until the middle of January 1865, when she returned home with her brother who was badly wounded. He was Captain Thompson, Company A, 40th Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was a helpless cripple and she nursed him the two years he lived.
