Mr. Ray was a native of Wesson. He retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. after a long career spanning some 37 years. He began his career with the Corp of Engineers and subsequently transferred to the U.S. Forest Service in Jackson. He served with the Forest Service in the regional offices in Atlanta, GA, Denver, CO, Albuquerque, NM, and the Washington, D.C. headquarters.
While not a professional forester, because of his outstanding work with the Forest Service, he was honored with membership in the Society of American Foresters. He received many honors during his career, including the Superior Service Award from Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz.
Mr. Ray's career led him to the Washington, D.C. headquarters of the Food Safety and Inspection Service, and while serving there he was named a charter member of the Federal Executive Service by President Reagan.
Mr. Ray was also a military veteran, having served with the United States Marines during the Korean War.
He attended Millsaps College and received his degree from Georgia State University in Atlanta. He subsequently studied at Harvard University in furtherance of his career and the University of Virginia working toward a masters.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, LaDelle Harlan Ray; brothers, William R. Ray and James P. Ray.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.D. and Edrie Sullivan Ray, a sister, Patricia Edwards, and a brother, Thomas Ray.
Nephews and great nephews will serve as pall bearers and great nephew, Perry Harlan Cliburn will officiate.
