Joseph Ripley was born in Berkshire County, Massachusetts near Windsor as the oldest child of Joseph and Susannah (Dunbar) Ripley. He was one of nine children born to the couple. When he was a child, the family moved north to Adams, Jefferson County, New York. Later, in about 1815 family research suggests that they may have been squatters on Grenadier Island in the Thousand Islands region.
In 1823, Joseph married Anna Boomer of Ellisburg, Jefferson County, New York. They had seven children (Calvin, Jane, Albert, Lydia, Jerusha, John, and Joseph).
Joseph moved around a good bit, and by 1833 moved from Jefferson County, New York to the Cleveland, Ohio area, where two of their children were born. Then, later in the 1830's, they moved to near Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a short time. Then, on to near Lena, Illinois, where they stayed until the early 1850's. At that point, they moved to Mower County, Minnesota. They remained there until the Civil War broke out, and their sons all joined up. They left Minnesota with their daughter Jane and husband, and moved to Carroll County, Illinois, where daughter, Lydia and husband, Peter Bashaw farmed.
Joseph died in 1862 and was originally buried on the Bashaw Farm. Later all buried there were re-interred at the Savannah Township Cemetery when it began. His wife, Anna, left a few years later with their youngest son and moved to California, where she died January 1, 1891 in Santa Cruz County.
