John H. London, 80, of Big Run, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at home with his family.
He was born Sept. 9, 1932, in Big Run, a son of the late Edison M. and Edith (Sutter) London.
He was a member of the last graduating class from Big Run High School in 1951.
On April 26, 1953, he married the former Beverly Jane Roney. She survives.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Punxsutawney. He was a member of the church choir and really enjoyed singing, even outside of church.
John and his wife Bev were the owners of Big Run Carpet for many years. Selling carpet came easy to John, as he was so good at talking to people, offering his quick wit and funny stories. The business is still owned and operated by his son, Jeff.
John has been heard of around the world as the Big Run "Frogcaster," the "Peeper Keeper" and "Peeper Frog Man," after charting for decades the first time spring peepers were heard each year behind Big Run Carpet. An annual spring banquet known as the "Peeper Banquet," held in March of each year, was started as a community event to celebrate the local peepers because of his charting them.
He was currently Chairman of the Board for the Jefferson County Housing Authority.
His true pride was his wife and his family. He is quoted saying, "I may not be the wealthiest man…but I am the richest man because of my family." He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John had a real soft spot for stray animals and pets. Often, the strays found a permanent home when they showed up at his door.
He enjoyed his daily routine in Big Run, starting at Wachob's Market for a cup of coffee, getting the mail at the post office, visiting with people and catching up on the happenings in the community, which he loved.
He loved golfing at Beechwoods Golf Course, where he was the "Golf Ranger." He simply enjoyed being outdoors, whether golfing, listening for peepers, or visiting the locals.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, John Paul London of Reynoldsville, Debra Ann Harari of Big Run, Jean Lynn Casaday and husband Lance of Rossiter, Patricia Louise London and Kipp Lukehart of Punxsutawney, Jeffrey Lee London of Punxsutawney, and Kim Howard London and Cathy of Punxsutawney; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, James London and wife Donna of Lordstown, Ohio; and one sister, Helen Johnston and husband Tom of Big Run.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at Grace United Methodist Church in Punxsutawney, officiated by Pastor Al Kimmel.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brenda D. Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Big Run.
