Gary was born in Fresno,CA but grew up in
Watsonville where him and his brother went at
an early age to live with their uncle Roy and
aunt Virginia Carpenter.Gary graduated from
Freedom High School in 1967 and enlisted in
Marines six days later on 21 June 1967 at the
Oakland Recruiting Office.
Gary arrived in Vietnam 15 December 1967
and was assigned to Hotel Company,2nd
Battalion,3rd Marine Regiment,3rd Marine
Division.
Gary died as a result of a gunshot wound to
the head from a sniper,during an engagement
with hostile forces near the East Bank Song
Yen River,4 kilometers south southeast of the
Tuy Loan Bridge.
Gary was single and served his country for 7
months and 9 days and was KIA #20,727.
He had been in Vietnam for 1 month and 15
days.
Gary was 18 years,6 months and 24 days old.
