Former Captain of Firemen Dies

Edward Casey on Fire Department 26 Years Till Retiring in '51

Edward M. Casey, 59, who served in the Janesville fire department for 26 years, retiring as captain May 6, 1951, died unexpectedly at 3 a.m. Wednesday in his home, 437 S. Jackson St. Since retirement he had been a dispatcher for the Vets Cab Co.

Edward M. Casey joined the fire department Oct. 17, 1923, and was named captain June 1, 1945. He served as first president when Janesville firemen organized its union as a unit of the International Fire Fighters Association in 1948.

A World War I veteran, he served for 14 months with the 86th Division, military police and was overseas nine months.

Edward Morris Casey, son of Dennis and Mary Ford Casey, was born in Porter Township, Aug. 27, 1895. He married Anna Ford, Aug. 25, 1925, in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Porter Township. He was a member of Holy Name Society of St. Patrick's parish.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, the Misses Margaret and Catherine Casey, Janesville: three sisters, Mrs. Rosella Martin, Madison, Mrs. Hazel Fessenden and Mrs. Lulu Anderson, both of Janesville; four brothers, Dennis and Harold, both of Janesville, John, of Footville and Emmett, of Edgerton.

Services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the Kimball-Nelson Funeral Home and at 9 o'clock in St. Patrick's Church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The Rosary service will be at 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home where friends may call Thursday and Friday.
