Richard C. Whiting, 79, passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City, due to complications from a stroke he suffered in October 2011.
Richard, aka "Red" or "RC", was born on June 2, 1933, in Lamont, the son of Harry and Doris Umbarger Whiting.
Richard grew up in the Lamont area and graduated from Lamont High School. In 1954, he was employed at Nickles Machine Shop where he retired as a machinist supervisor in 1994. Richard was a member of First Lutheran Church where he had been president of the Sunday School.
Richard was also a farmer and past president and member of the Rural Water District in Osage County. He was an active member of the Classic Cars of Ponca City where he participated in numerous car and charity events. He was also a board member of the 101 Ranch Old Timers Association.
He enjoyed hunting, gardening and traveling with his daughter Shelley as they went to Alaska, Canada, Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone National Park and the Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico. He traveled extensively along Route 66 and enjoyed the historical points of interest. He also enjoyed helping with the 101 Ranch and preserving its Western Heritage. He was also block captain in his neighborhood and helped organize activities.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Terry.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda; children, Shelley Dobson, Donna Bickle, Larry Strawn all of Edmond and Rick Strawn of Ponca City; two sisters, Donna Hickerson of Enid and Jean Stevens of Plano, Texas; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to come to the Pioneer Park Shelter House at 12 p.m. on Saturday for a light meal and bring pictures to reminisce of Richard's 79 years of life.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, at Grace Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Tom Howard officiating. Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery.
