Darrell was born November 1918. He attended high school in Jonesboro, Illinois and graduated from Laramie University. He was a pilot of a B-24 in World War II. He worked as an engineer for oil companies. He died in an accident on the Gulf Coast in 1978. He married Caroline Manning. They had four children, Phillip, Charlie, Rhonda and Bruce.

LIFE Magazine had a story of a B-24 and a crew that flew 25 combat missions in three theaters without a scratch. "Captain Darrell L. Sims, red-headed pilot from Jonesboro, Illinois, led the crew of "Jerks Natural" to a perfect record.
