Betsy was the oldest of the children of Joseph Fairchild and Anna Manning. At 18, Betsey married Orrin Wilbur Childs. Her family was from Chenango County, New York. Orrin farmed there for 18 years. He had relatives who lived in Chenango County, too. In 1868, Orrin sold his place in Chenago County and moved back to neighboring Broome County where they lived the rest of their lives.

Two years after Orrin and Betsey were married three of her siblings died within a week of each other (September 24, 26, 30, in 1851). They were all very young. It is not known what the cause was.

Orrin and Betsey had three children, Frank in 1850, Charles in 1860 and John "Seymour" in 1868. Typically women during this era were having children every 1-3 years so it is unusual to see such long gaps between births. She may have possibly had several miscarriages. In 1900 she reported in the census that she had given birth to three children.

Their son Charles was single and died when he was 26. In 1880, at the age of 19 he was living with his parents and was a servant. He was listed as being "idiotic." Census enumerators were given a specific definition for the term "idiot." An idiot was "a person the development of whose mental faculties were arrested in infancy or childhood before coming to maturity." A further census schedule indicated the believed cause was that Charles had had scarlet fever at the age of 3. Once a major cause of death, it is now effectively treated with antibiotics. He was said to have a large head and was not even partly self-supporting. The census indicated he was never institutionalized.

Their sons Frank and Seymour each married, but neither had children. Seymour completed 4 years of high school. He and his wife were teachers and with time, he became the district school superintendent. Frank was a farmer on his father's property and took care of his mother after Orrin died in 1907 at the age of 81. Betsey died at the age of 90.
