We first find he and his family in the 1810 U.S. Census for Blooming Grove, Orange, New York. The family there upon removed to Hector, Tompkins, New York where they are found in the 1820 and 1830 U.S. Census. There are eleven children in the 1820 census, but it is not known if there were any servants or farm hands in those eleven. Eight children have been identified: Asahel, Josephus, Charles, Anson, Silas, George Washington, Currence and Byron.
All his sons except for Byron located to Lake County, Indiana in 1837 and Charles and his wife accompanied them where they are noted to be earlier settlers of the area. His daughter, Currence, later came to the state.
After the death of his wife Charles went to live with his son Josephus in Porter County.
