Hastings resident the Rev. W.C. "Bill" Westman, 69, of 1336 N. Cedar Ave., died Tuesday, Nov.14, 2000, at his home.
Memorial services were Saturday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Revs. Kathleen Kasper and Neal Anthony, and Bishop David DeFreese officiating. Private family burial will follow. There was no visitation. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home was in charge.
The Rev. Westman was born Oct. 24, 1931, to Charles and Ruth (Weigle) Westman in Grand Forks, N.D. He attended elementary school and graduated from high school in 1951 in Grand Forks. He graduated from Aakers Business College in Grand Forks. He then served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and served in Texas and Japan. He then returned to Grand Forks where he graduated from the University of North Dakota. On May 31, 1953, he married Ruby Kirkegaard. He graduated from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., and was ordained in 1964 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. He worked as a missionary in Columbia and completed a year of study at Spanish Language Institute in San Jose, Costa Rica. He and his family returned to the United States in 1969. He served at the Calvary Lutheran Church and Grant Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake, Iowa. He then moved to Butterfield, Minn., where he served at First Lutheran Church and Long Lake Lutheran Church. From 1976-95, he was a director of pastoral care at Good Samaritan Village in Hastings. He served at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Blue Hill until his health failed. He retired from the ministry Aug. 1, 1999.
He was president of Hastings/Adams County Ministrial Association, treasurer of Blue Hill Community Ministrial Association and president of Hastings Noon Kiwanis Club. He also served on the first Leadership Hastings board of directors. He served on Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital Foundation board and the Bridge inc., board of directors. He was a volunteer chaplain at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospice for 12 years and at the Hastings Police Department for six years. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 176 in Blue Hill.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Patti Feldman of Glenvil and Susan R. Strong of Kearney; one son, Mark of Hastings; his mother of Hastings; four grandchildren; and two great-children.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to First St. Paul's Lutheran Church Building Fund or the Endowment Fund in Blue Hill; Mary Lanning Hospice; Hastings Police Department; or the donor's choice.
