DEATH'S REAPER AT WORK/JOSHUA S. GROVES
Vernon county loses another sturdy and prominent pioneer soldier citizen in the death of JOSHUA S. GROVES, which occurred at midnight of last Friday, after an illness of two months duration from lung and heart trouble. He was a man who held the universal esteem of every man, woman and child familiar with his candid, genial life characteristics, the public shares with family and relatives the great grief at his taking off. Mr. Groves would have reached his sixtieth birthday had he survived till April 8th. He was born in Athens county, Ohio. He came with his parents to Vernon county and settled in the town of Liberty in 1854, where he has ever resided, pursuing all these years the occupation of a farmer and of late years conducted a store at Ross, in connection with other interests. He was married in 1861. He leaves a widow and six grown children: three sons, Will, Hobart, and George, and three daughters, Mrs. J. F. Huschka, Mrs. Henry Huschka and Miss Mame Groves. Three sisters survive him, Mrs. A. W. Birkford of California, Mrs. Hannah Busby of Oregon, and Mrs. Martin, of Nebraska. Mr. Groves served gallantly with Company C, in the Eighth Wisconsin, or Eagle regiment. He was an active participant in 35 of the 36 engagements of his regiment.
About two years since Mr. Groves moved to Viroqua, where he sought partial retirement from the active and hard work of a life he had so long pursued, leaving the affairs on the farm and store to his sons. The funeral of this exemplary citizen was largely attended at the Methodist church, Monday afternoon, conducted by his long-time associate and friend, Rev. G. W. Nuzum, assisted by Revs. Tressider and Stemen. His remains were followed to the tomb in city cemetery by a large concourse of sorrowing kindred and citizens generally.
The family take this occasion at this time to express their thanks for the many manifestations of neighborly kindness shown during the long illness and last sad rites. The Vernon County Censor (Viroqua), Wednesday, 28 Feb. 1900, page 2.
