SONORA – Scott Thomason Shurley, born Aug. 5, 1953, in San Angelo, passed away April 7, 2001.
He was a special individual and a well-respected member of Sutton County. He graduated from Sonora High School with many fond memories of friends and special events such as three state football championships. He then ventured to Texas A&M where he graduated in the class of '75. He continued the Aggie tradition and encouraged both of his daughters to attend and graduate from A&M. He then returned to Sutton County where he continued his ranching career. He was an active member of many organizations including Dee Ora Masonic Lodge, Game Dinner Association, Sonora School Board, and founder and president of Recoverable Resource, Inc. Scott's involvement in these organizations and events led him to many lifelong friendships that continued to be dear to his heart up to his last moments. Scott's sweet and giving spirit contributed to his largest role in life as a true champion to his family and friends.

He fulfilled this role by encouraging everyone to enjoy life as much as he did. Some of his favorite pastimes were hunting with his dogs, fishing with his family and friends, and, of course, listening to and playing good music.

Scott is survived by his two daughters, Kristen Shurley '02, and Kayla Shurley '04; mother, Mildred T. Shurley, father, Gene Shurley '48; sister, Suzanne Huddleston '77, and husband, Doug; nieces, Whitney and Zane Martin; grandnephew, Dawson Martin Guthrie; cousins, Mark Shurley '79, and wife, Kathy; uncle, Philip Thomason; and special friends, Mitzi Mathews, Carl Teaff, and Lee Bloodworth, among others.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 9, at the Church of the Good Shepherd Presbyterian with the Rev. Lewis Allen officiating. Burial will follow in the Sonora Cemetery. Arrangements are by Kerbow Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Rhett Johnson, Will L. Mathews, Sean Mathews, Drake Shurley, Shay Shurley, Robert Carl Teaff, Kerr Wardlaw and Casey Jamerson.

The family requests memorials be made to a charity of one's choice.
