James A. Johnson, 83

Muncie - James A. Johnson, 83, formerly of Muncie, died Thursday afternoon, August 19, 2004 at the St. Anne Home in Fort Wayne. He was born in Marshall, Illinois the son of Clayton and Verna Johnson, moved to Muncie as a child, graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1938 and Ball State Teachers College (now Ball State University) in 1942. He served with the Navy in the Atlantic during WW II. He lived most of his life in Muncie until moving to Huntertown two years ago.

Mr. Johnson was employed as a chemist at Muncie Chevrolet (now Muncie Transmissions Limited) before WW II. After WW II he owned and operated Johnson Donut Shop for 32 years, then was employed at OSCO Drugs on White River Blvd. for 15 years prior to his retirement in 1994.

Mr. Johnson was a Mason belonging to Blue Lodge and Scottish Rite of Indianapolis. He was a member of Fairlawn Church of Christ, Muncie and South Winds Church of Christ, Fort Wayne. He enjoyed fishing and boating with his son Phil and visiting his daughter Kathy in Seattle.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Jean Johnson; his son, Dr. Philip Johnson (wife-Patti), Huntertown; his daughter, Dr. Mary Kathleen Shriver, Seattle, Washington; his sister, Mary Combs, Logansport; his nephew, Bob Combs, Logansport; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Noland and Richard Johnson.

Services will be held in THE MEEKS MORTUARY & CREMATORY CHAPEL at 1:30 p.m. on Monday. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery with Military Rites by the Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard.

Friends may call at the Meeks Mortuary and Crematory from 2 until 6 p.m. on Sunday and one hour prior to services on Monday.

Memorials may be directed at to Fairlawn Church of Christ, Muncie or South Winds Church of Christ , Fort Wayne.
