Gerald Holmes 80, Locust Fork, died Monday, Sept. 5, 2011, after a courageous battle with cardiovascular disease. Mr. Holmes was reared in the East Lake-Woodlawn area and was an outstanding football player at Woodlawn High School, making the first-string all-city team in 1948.
Turning down a football scholarship, he joined the Air Force in 1948 and was trained as a crash/resuce fireman, a path he followed the rest of his working life. He joined Hayes Aircraft International upon his discharge from the Air Force in 1951 and served as fire chief and security chief, working with the Department of Defense 40 years, and retiring from Hayes-Pemco in 1990 at the doctor's insistence.
Mr. Holmes was predeceased by father William Holmes, mother Grace Holmes Rutledge; grandparents who reared him Effie and Thomas Carroll; brother-in law Col. (ret) Harold "Bud" Page; father-in-law Harold "Pat" Page; mother-in-law Rachel Page.
He is survived by high school sweetheart and wife of 60 years Vicki "Violet" Page Holomes; sons Steven Scott (Sherry) Holmes, Cleveland and Gerald Holmes Jr; grandchildren Jason and Laura Holmes, Steven Jarod Holmes, Justin Scott (Amy) Holmes, Lindsay Nicole Holmes; great-granddaughter Mary Caroline Holmes, all of Cleveland; brother Robert Arlien (Phyllis) Holmes, Birmingham; brother-in-law and fried Col. (ret) Joe C. (Anita) Page, Birmingham.
Mr. Holmes spent many years coaching teams from the Peanut League though the Dixie Boys at Bonds Field in Center Point.
He was a charter member of Ridgecrest Baptist in Center Point, later becoming a faiful member of Locust Fort Baptist.
Services were held Thursday, Sept. 8, at nood in the chapel with burial at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East. Rufus Harris officiated. Pallbearers were Justin Scott Holmes, Steven Jarod Holmes, James Thomas,Earl Paye, Pepper Grubbs and Timothy Carroll. Honorary pallbearers were all the retired firemen and guards from Hayes/Pemco. Memorials may be made to Locust Fork Baptist Building Fund, POB 97, Locust Fork, AL 35097, or John Croyle's Big Oak Ranch, Sprigville.
