Marvin George Nushan, age 75, of Knoxville, TN passed away Monday, November 19th, 2012 at Tennova Residential Hospice surround by his family after a lengthy illness. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Marvin was born in New York, NY on April 9th, 1937 and grew up in Virginia and North Carolina. He graduated from Boyden High School in Salisbury, NC. He liked being a Tarheel. While attending the University of North Carolina, he was business manager of the university newspaper, The Daily Tarheel, member of the swim team, and Pi Lamda Phi fraternity. After college he volunteered and served proudly and honorably in the United States Air Force. He was an instructor in the 61st squadron at Chanute Air Force Base, Rantoul, IL for four years. He taught United States pilots and pilots from foreign countries friendly to our nation to fly in all weather conditions using the Link trainers. He never lost his love of airplanes. After being honorably discharged, he moved with his family to Oak Ridge, TN to work as an engineer at ORNL and attend the University of Tennessee, College of Engineering. After being employed at ORNL for several years, he decided to go to work at ORTEC in Oak Ridge, TN. After many years he left ORTEC to be sales manager of PULCIR, Inc., Oak Ridge, TN, a representative for nuclear medical and research equipment companies. He worked in Europe frequently while being employed at ORTEC, so he promised his wife that he would take early retirement and take her to see the world. He kept his promise. They traveled abroad for two and a half years. After several more years, he decided he missed being around people and began working for Whirlpool Corporation, Knoxville, TN. He retired again to help care and spend time with his beloved daughter, Valerie Katrina Nushan when she was stricken with a terminal illness. This was the greatest sorrow of his life. He was civic minded and helped organize and was charter president of the Farragut Jaycees. He was instrumental in the formation of the Head Start School in Concord, TN. He wanted young children from underprivileged families in the area to get a good start toward their education. He was a good person. He was an avid outdoorsman and fell in love with the people and the beautiful mountains of Eat Tennessee after moving here. He said this was "God's country," and never wanted to leave. He spent many happy hours hiking, white water canoeing and spelunking in area caves as a young man. He enjoyed piloting his airplane from the Oliver Spring, TN airport as a member of the Oak Ridge Flying Club. He was a scuba diver and motorcycle enthusiast. He was a member of the Oak Ridge Touring Eagles Motorcycle Club. Marvin and his wife rode from Knoxville, TN to Alaska on the old gravel Alcan Highway. He said it was the greatest trip of his life. He really enjoyed his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Harry and Olive Trudeau Nushan, Salisbury, NC, sister, Lois Frances Nushan, Charlotte, NC and daughter Valerie Katrina Nushan, Knoxville, TN. Survivors include his wife of fifty-four years, Frances Gibbs Nushan, Knoxville, TN, daughter Diana Yvonne Nushan Nassios and husband George Nassios, Knoxville, TN and his beloved grandson Constantine (Dino) George Nassios, Knoxville, TN, sister-in-law, Patricia Flowers and husband Bill Flowers, Callahan, FL, sister-in-law, Brenda Green and husband Ernest Green, Callahan, FL and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Marvin's family would like to thank his longtime family physician, Dr. John Bushore and his staff (especially Teresa) at Summit Medical Center Group and Dean Hill for taking good care and spending time with him. They encouraged him and lifted his spirits. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society in Marvin's honor: American Cancer Society, P.O.
