Former Riverton resident Herschal L. Williams died on Thursday night, Dec. 4, 2008, at the home of his son Chuck in Casper at the age of 87.

Herschal Lamar Williams was born in Wheeling, Mo., on Dec. 27, 1921, the son of John Dallas Williams and Jessie Lee (Vanderpool) Williams.

He grew up in Missouri and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He served with the 24th Corps in the Pacific Theater of Operations for 14 months. He received the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

On May 12, 1945, he married Eva Mae Pettit in Sterling, Colo. She preceded him in death on March 18, 2002.

The family moved to Riverton in 1972, from Sterling, Colo. He had worked as a truck driver since completing military service, and also painted houses.

Mr. Williams was a member of the Nazarene faith. His family said he enjoyed tinkering around the house and building wood projects, including a raft.

He was a member of the V.F.W., and enjoyed going to the Eagles Club.

Survivors include three sons, Gary Williams and his wife Ruth of Loveland, Colo., Richard Williams and his wife Stephanie of Riverton, and Chuck Williams and his wife Chris of Casper; daughters, Janice Broyles of Dix, Neb., Debbie Austin of Riverton, Sherrie Szablewski and husband Victor of Grandby, Mo.; Pam Bennett and husband Matt of Riverton, Kim Johnson and husband Bruce of Elk River, Minnesota, and Diane Wessels and husband Tony of Bushnell, Neb.; 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; a brother, Jerry Williams of Cottonwood, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ted and Paul, three sisters, Bernadine, Fern, and Colleen; grandson, Jeffrey Broyles; son-in-laws, Darrell Austin, Robert Broyles, and Larry Spencer.
