He was born on Friday, 18 Dec 1874, in Fairfax, Allendale, South Carolina. He was named George Vincent after his grandfather, Vincent Croft. He was 6'4" tall and had bright red hair. G. V. was a dry kiln salesman and was a part of the charcoal wood industry which was a big activity in the forests during the early 1900's. The great pine forests from Alabama, Mississippi, Florida and Arkansas were his area of travel. He traveled throughout the South by 1910, with Florida as his home base. He married Hattie Mae Johns on 4 January 1914 in Florida and they had one child, (Thelma) Trudy Mae who was born 1 November 1914 in Halsell, Alabama, a milling town in northern Alabama. Hattie, the love of his life, died an untimely death on 3 January 1916 due to pneumonia. He grieved over her for the rest of his life. For a time, he returned to South Carolina and was a gentleman farmer, where he raised asparagus and hogs. He moved to Mobile, Alabama around 1947 to be near his daughter, Trudy, who lived there. He died in Mobile on 17 June 1949.
