GREENSBORO — John Bynum Merritt Jr., 86, died Saturday June 30, 2012 at Friends Homes West.

Born September 9, 1925 in New York City, he was the son of John Bynum Merritt Sr. and Emma Ross Leslie. Johnny attended the Woodberry Forest School (Virginia) graduating in 1943.

After enrolling at The University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill in 1943, he left to join the United States Army during World War II. Trained as an anti-tank specialist, Johnny served in the 100th Infantry Div. as a rifleman and squad scout. From November 1944 to the War's end, he participated in the South France Breakout, including the Vosges Mountain Campaign, the Liberation of Bitche, France, and the capture of Heilbronn, Germany. He then served an additional year during the Occupation of Germany. Johnny earned a Bronze Star, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and other honors for his military service.

After returning to the United States, Johnny completed his studies and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill. He worked as a pharmaceutical sales representative, became Guilford County's first licensed tree farmer, sold real estate and tended to his investments.

Johnny remained a life-long resident of Greensboro. He learned to scuba dive, snow ski, and play tennis. Johnny loved the outdoors; he hunted as a young man, and fished long into his retirement years.

Johnny will be especially remembered for the love and devotion he had for his immediate family. He was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church and a life-long supporter of The Salvation Army and Urban Ministries.

Survivors include his children, John Bynum Merritt III, and his wife, Susan Merritt; Blaine Souther Merritt and his wife, Nancy Shuba Merritt; and Nancy Ross Merritt; and his grandchildren, Bryn Ashley Merritt and John Bynum Merritt IV. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 55 years, Nancy Souther Merritt.

A celebration of his life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012. The family will visit with friends following the service in the Virginia Gilmore Room at the church. In lieu of flowers, it is asked that contributions be made to The Salvation Army or First Presbyterian Church in Johnny's name.
