James Mathew "Jim" Elrod, 82, died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at Putnam Community Medical Center.
The Chattanooga, Tennessee native had lived in Palatka since 1949, coming from Nashville, Tennessee. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, having served as a Sunday School Teacher and Treasurer for many years. He graduated in 1947 from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn. with a Bachelor's Degree and in 1949 from George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn. with a Master's Degree. He was a U.S. Army/Air Force veteran of World War II, having been assigned to the 5th Chemical Depot at Hickam Field at Pearl harbor and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He also served on the Island of Guam with the 20th Air Force to build Harmon Field. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Palatka for 48 years and served as advisor for the Key Club at the High School. He was honored as a member of "Who's Who Biographical Record of School District Officials," First Edition in 1976 and also organized and was a Director of the Putnam County Teachers Credit Union. He began his work with the Putnam County School System as a biology teacher. He started the DCT Program at the High School and later served as Supervisor of the Vocational Program for the school system. For 25 years, he worked as the Personnel Director for the Putnam County School Board, retiring in 1982.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sarak Pinkleton Elrod of Palatka; sisters, Bobbie E. Tomerlin of Austin, Texas and Frances Lorraine Elrod of Chattanooga, Tenn.; five nephews; three nieces; and two God-children, Lee Taber and Cathy Taber Richardson, both of Miami.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, 2:30 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church with Rev. Hardy B. Sandlin III officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill East Cemetery with American Legion Bert Hodge Post No. 45 conducting military honors. The Administrative Board of St. James United Methodist Church, the Kiwanis Club of Palatka, the Pearl Harbor Survivors, and American Legion Bert Hodge Post No. 45 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
