1952 - 2012

Nancy Pleitz Hinson, wife of Dr. William A. Hinson, died Sunday, January 1, 2012 following a brief illness. She was born November 24, 1952 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Dr. Hinson is a retired Pensacola Ophthalmologist. Nancy is also survived by their daughter, Elizabeth Hinson Reoch and her husband, Paul, and their children, Rylee and Liam; son, Matthew Pleitz Hinson, and wife, Stephanie, and their son, Roman; brother, Dan Pleitz, and wife, Cathy.

Nancy was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James L. Pleitz who brought her to Pensacola in 1959 as the six-year-old "little girl of the new pastor" of First Baptist Church. She began her life here with pigtails and shyness and grew to be a lady of great dignity and accomplishment.

Leadership and excellence developed early in Nancy both at Pensacola High School and in the youth program of FBC. As the church youth prepared for an extended medical, dental and music mission to the Dominican Republic, Nancy chose to spend a year training to be the head surgical assistant to the mission's eye surgeon. Together they performed many cataract removals, sometimes outside under the shade of a banyan tree. Her skill was noted even by the experienced nurses.

Later she led a youth post-hurricane effort to Mississippi for which she received a letter of commendation from the President of the United States.

Nancy graduated from Baylor University, Baylor School of Nursing with a BSN in 1974 and in 1975 Nancy and Bill were married. As Bill finished medical school and throughout his internship and residency in ophthalmology, Nancy practiced her skill giving loving care to her patients at hospitals and medical centers in Gainesville, Florida and Mobile, Alabama.

In 1981 the two Pensacolians moved back home to practice medicine and to begin a family. She devoted her life to her children, husband and parents, to caring for others, and to her church.

At missions emphasis time Nancy's portrayal of Lottie Moon, missionary extraordinaire, was extraordinarily delightful. When her parents died in recent times she astounded us all with her delivery of beautiful eulogies with such love and grace that they will never be forgotten.

Living her entire life under the watchful eyes of a church filled with people who loved her, she never disappointed. Admiration and respect for Nancy increased with years.

Words we think of when we think about Nancy are words that relate to life, energy and the human spirit. Vibrant, vivacious, fun-loving and mischievous, yet, sincere, generous and uncommonly kind.

Her love of music was woven tightly with her love for God as she immersed her talent and faithfulness into the FBC Music Ministry, especially the Sanctuary Choir whom she served two terms as president.

Nancy referred to the choir as her "special family within her church family" and chose to share the news of her illness with them first, in a spiritual and candid way before anyone else had heard. At a choir and orchestra gathering the week she received her diagnosis of cancer she began addressing them with a smile and with the words, "This is the day the Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it, Psalm 118:24."

It is with great sadness that we give up this joyful and beautiful life but we have the happy reassurance that now her joy is enhanced in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

The Sanctuary Choir will honor Nancy's life with some of her favorite music during the Memorial Service at First Baptist Church of Pensacola at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, January 4th. Dr. Barry Howard, pastor, will officiate. The family will greet guests in the sanctuary following the service.

Memorial gifts may be sent to First Baptist Church, 500 North Palafox St., Pensacola, FL 32501 or to Covenant Hospice, 5041 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504.
