Kenneth Clyde Wilkerson, 80, of Statesville, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on October 29, 2012.

Ken was born on December 15, 1931 in Davidson County, NC and was raised in Thomasville by his late parents, Clyde and Rosa Rickard Wilkerson. He was educated in High Point city schools. In 1948, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a C-46 transport crew chief at Clinton Air Force Base in Wilmington, OH. During his five years of active duty he served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant and later served in the Air Force Reserves for ten years.

While in Ohio, Ken met his bride to be, Betty Smith, and they married on January 31, 1953. Shortly after their marriage, the couple returned to High Point, NC to begin their life together. Ken joined the Mead Corporation, and after completing an eighteen month training program, he worked in sales for ten years prior to working for Champion International. In 1978, Iredell Container Corporation was founded and he served as its president until his death. His wealth of knowledge in the packaging industry, gift for developing relationships, and keen business sense helped build a successful container manufacturing company.

Ken was generous with his time, talent and treasure, and enthusiastically numerous organizations. He believed that all he had belonged to the Lord, and he endeavored to give as much as possible to the people and organizations he cared about most. Until his health began to fail, Ken was an active member of Western Avenue Baptist Church and belonged to the Clyde Gurley Sunday School class. He was a charter member of the Taylorsville Shrine Club, and a member of Masonic Lodge 27, where he was a 32nd degree mason. He was a member and former chairman of the Board of Directors at the local BB&T as well as Statesville Christian School. An avid and skilled golfer from the age of seven, Ken was one of the founders and former chairman of the board at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, NC. He also pursued his passion for golf locally, and served as a former board member of the Statesville Country Club.

Left to honor Ken and remember his love is his beloved wife of 59 years, Betty; daughter, Pamela (Lunk) Lindley; granddaughters, Lisa (Mike) Huff and Laura (Rick) Daniels; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Landon Huff, Garrett and Noah Bell, and Ava Daniels; sister, Louise (Joe) Beeson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his son, Kenneth Clyde Wilkerson, Jr. Ken will be remembered for his sense of humor, his drive to help the community, and his love and willingness to serve the Lord.

Prior to his eighteen month battle with cancer, Ken and Betty traveled extensively, and spent many precious times with their family and friends. The family extends deeply felt and sincere thanks to; Dr. James Foxworthy and staff, Dr. Ruby Grimm and staff, Dr. Robert Reindollar and staff, Dr. Sholar, Dr. Gavini, the Iredell Infusion Center and nursing staff, Iredell Memorial Hospital and nursing staff, and the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County. Ken was very thankful for the great care they provided along with his wife. These people genuinely cared about Ken and worked together to help him and Betty enjoy his remaining time on earth, and prepare for his new, eternal life in Heaven. Many thanks for all the prayers, visits, phone calls, cards, meals, and gestures of love and concern during this difficult time. God Bless you all.
