Pauline Wilma Dobson Chavis, 80, of the Montrose Health Center, Montrose, died at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 27, 1999, at the health center. She had been in failing health since 1990.

Born October 27, 1918, in Denmark Township, Lee County, she was the daughter of Frank Mills and Martha Williams Wilder Dobson. She married Milton S. Burgus on July 10, 1937, in Nashua. He preceded her in death. She later married Herman Chavis on October 27, 1978, at Miami Beach, Florida.

Mrs. Chavis was a former receptionist at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. She had lived in the Fort Madison area for the past five years.

She was of the Protestant faith and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include one son, Carroll L. Burgus of Oskaloosa; one daughter, Barbara Pierce of Texarkana, Arkansas; one sister, Velna Russell of Loomis, California; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one son and two grandsons.

The body of Mrs. Chavis has been cremated.

A memorial has been established. Contributions made be made at Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison.
