Charles Byron Culpepper, second child of Eula Frances Shelfer and Warren Ebenezer Culpepper. Conflicting records have his place of birth was either Quincy, Gadsden, Florida or Thomasville, Thomas, Georgia. In 1917 he states on the WWI Draft his birth was Quincy, Fl.

When brother Ralph was born in 1899, the family was living in Scranton, Mississippi. His birth was announced in the paper. No 1900 census entry has been located.

When his father was deputy marshall in Scranton, Mississippi in 1902, Charles also worked for the city doing odd jobs. The newspaper listed him as being on the city payroll. By early 1903 the family was in Orange, Texas. His mother died of TB in 1904 and his father died in 1907, leaving Charles as the head of household. The 1910 census has Charles with 5 of his siblings. Family history is that other family members stepped in to help as well.

June 5, 1917, he registered for the WWI Draft. Born Quincy, Florida; age 30 with black-very gray hair. Residence is the Tugboat Nellie, Beaumont, Texas. He is captain. States that he supports his brother who has been in the hospital for 5 or 6 years. That would be Lawson who died of TB in 1920.

December 9, 1919, Byron married Ruth Clark Hayes. It was a home wedding in Jasper, Georgia. 1920 they are on the Orange County, Texas census. They had one daughter, she was born in 1921.
He was an employee of the Standard Export Lumber, Co. as a tug boat captain, died following an operation per his obit. His daughter told me Charles was having another tugboat built in Mobile, Alabama, on Mobile Bay when he died of gallbladder gangrene. Had lived in Orange, Texas before that. The year was 1924.
Charles is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Orange, Texas.
