Violet V. Hecht, age 81 of Hills, MN died Thursday, November 16, 2006 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 20th, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills, MN with Rev. Lowell Berg, officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery at Hills, MN.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at the Roste Funeral Home of Hills.

Violet Viola (Erland) Hecht was born on December 11, 1924, on the family farm north of Howard, South Dakota, the daughter of Lewis and Alvilda (Abrahamson) Erland. She was baptized as an infant in the family living room. Violet was confirmed in Bellview Lutheran Church of rural Howard, SD. She received her first through eighth grade education at a rural country school and later graduated from Howard High School in Howard, SD. After graduation she went out to Palo Alto, CA, where she lived with her sister Alice and her family working for Montgomery Wards in the credit department. She later worked in a Defense Plant, making parts for radio tubes. During the summer of 1945, she worked in a Cannery, canning peaches and tomatoes. When the War was over in 1945, she came back to Sioux Falls, SD and worked for Montgomery Wards credit department and later Sioux Falls Book and Stationary. On September 18, 1947, she was united in marriage to Melvin Hecht of Larchwood, IA, at the First Lutheran Church of Sioux Falls. The couple farmed east of Larchwood until they retired. Four children were born to this union; Larry, Sharon, David and Kevin. Violet worked in the Tuff Home dietary department for several years. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills, MN all her married life, where she served as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school treasurer, aid secretary, and with mission action, making quilts. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, crocheting, knitting and quilting. Violet also enjoyed visiting her father's homeland in Norway with her brother, Chester in June of 1985.

She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Melvin Hecht of Hills, MN; four children, Larry (wife Marjorie) Hecht of Larchwood, IA, Sharon Rossow of Hills, David (wife Nancy) Hecht of South Sioux City, NE and Kevin (wife Lori) Hecht of Inwood, IA; thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Chester Erland of Howard, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Norman, two sisters, Alice (Mrs. Joe Engel of Sioux Falls) and Agnes (Mrs. Charley Bickett of Oldham, SD).
