Alfred "Fritz" Hackbarth, 83, of 418 Water St., Chilton, died on Monday, July 28, 1997 at the Calumet Homestead Health and Rehabilitation Center in New Holstein.
He was born on July 27, 1914 In Hilbert, son of the late Henry and Emma (Kurth) Hackbarth.
He married Margaret Schmidlkofer on Feb. 21, 1941 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chilton.
He graduated with honors from Hilbert High School in 1931 and farmed in the Hilbert area 30 years prior to his marriage. He later worked for the Arps Corp. in New Holstein for 32 years, until retiring in 1962. He also served as caretaker of St. Augustine Cemetery and was known as Digger O'Dell. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Chilton.
Fritz was an avid hunter, fisherman and fan of the Cubs, Braves and Brewers. He enjoyed riding his bike around town, which was evident by the 57,000 miles on the bike odometer, with only 9,000 miles on his car.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret; one son, Richard, Appleton; seven daughters, Kathleen (Bob) Slattery, Dousman; Karen (Doug) Bass, Mequon; Susan (Mike) Woelfel, Neenah; Nancy (Steve) Tomich, Milwaukee; Marilyn (Jim) Lenz, Green Bay; Barbara (Dan) Anderson, Pewaukee; Janet Hackbarth, Milwaukee; 11 grandchildren, Robert, Daniel (Kerry) and Leah Hackbarth; David Bass, Jennifer (Gary) Cutler; Christopher and Jared Lenz; Johnathan and Brian Miller; Emily (Matt) Hunt; and Brian Anderson.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Holly and Edna; and four brothers, Walter, Clarence, William and Elmer.
Funeral services will be at 2p.m. on Thursday, July 31, at St. Man Catholic Church in Chilton, with the Rev. Fred Peters S.D.S. officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Wieting Funeral Home in Chilton from 11 a.m. on Thursday, until 1:30 p.m., when family prayers will be held. .A memorial fund has been established, in the name of Fntz Hackbarth, for the Visiting Nurses Assoc. Hospice and the Calumet Homestead. "Our Fritz was the Quinessential father."
