THERMOPOLIS -- Memorial services for Dorothy Louise Bender, 89, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Community Federated Church in Thermopolis by Rev. Dan Molyneux.
Miss Bender died July 9, 1992, at the Wyoming Retirement Center in Basin. She was born March 8, 1903, in Joplin, Mo., the daughter of Jesse and Grace (Smith) Bender. She grew up in Galena, Kan., where she graduated high school. She attended Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., for two years and received a B.A. degree in 1930 from the University of Kansas.
Miss Bender came to Thermopolis and taught sixth grade in 1929, and then taught sixth, seventh and eighth grade in 1937. During World War II, she became principal of Thermopolis Junior High and was named Teacher of the Year.
She attended San Jose State, San Francisco State and the University of Wyoming during the years, retiring in 1968.
Miss Bender was a member of the Community Federated Church, PEO Chapter K, Eastern Star, 500 Club, Ochta Mochta Bridge Club, Sewing Club and was a past member of the Wyoming Education Association and the National Education Association.
She enjoyed playing bridge, working as a Grey Lady at the hospital and Pioneer Home, and was active in the Meals on Wheels program.
Survivors include a brother, Henry Bender of El Dorado Springs, Mo.; a sister, Ruth Sidwell of San Francisco; and several nieces and newphews.
Cremation has taken place. Memorials to the Community Church Memorial Fund, 244 N. 6th., Thermopolis 82443 would be appreciated by the family.
The Mortimore Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
