She was born Sept. 2, 1919, the daughter of the late Wesley and Della Caudill Tackett. Mrs. Barber was preceded in death by her son, Wesley Roger Barber in 2000; and her sister, Beatrice Helms in 2009.
Gertrude attended Fairview Schools and transferred to Ashland High School where she graduated in 1939. She was married to Cecil D. Barber for 45 years until Mr. Barber's death in 1984. Mrs. Barber was a member of Westwood Enterprise Baptist Church for 89 years. Her greatest joy as a member was teaching Sunday school for more than 20 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Venita Barber Howell of Flatwoods; her son, Darrell B. Barber (Marianne) of Lexington; grandson Steven D. (Angela) Barber of Grayson; two great-grandchildren, Sara and Nicole; a brother-in-law, Gale Helms of Sebring, Fla.; niece Dinah Searle of Syracuse, N.Y.; four step-grandchildren, Danny Howell (Pam) of Raceland, Natalie Howell (Tom) Grizzle of Raceland, Delinda Howell Adkins of Summit and Kim Howell (Chuck) Burdett of Columbus, Ohio; stepgreat-grandchild, Presley Adkins, a student at Murray State University.
Funeral services for Mrs. Barber will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
